Wind does not push a roof off. It lifts it, through negative pressure on the leeward side, and the damage it leaves extends well past the area where covering is actually missing.
Wind flowing over a roof accelerates and creates a zone of reduced pressure above the surface while the interior remains at ambient. The resulting differential pulls upward on the covering, and it is strongest at edges, corners and ridges where the flow separates most sharply. This is why damage concentrates at perimeters and why the middle of a roof field often looks untouched while the eaves and rake edges have failed.
Understanding it as suction changes what gets inspected. The question is not only what blew off but what was partially lifted and set back down. A shingle that has broken its adhesive seal and been pushed back flat looks entirely normal from the ground and from a distance, and it is now a loose flap that will lift again in the next moderate wind. A survey that counts missing pieces and stops there misses most of the actual damage.
Repeated uplift cycling works fasteners loose incrementally. A nail that has withdrawn a few millimeters no longer holds the covering down properly and it has opened a path through the deck at the same time. On a metal roof, backed out screws break the compression on their washers and each one becomes a small water entry point.
Sealed laminate shingles fail differently again. The factory adhesive strip that bonds each course to the one below is what resists uplift, and once that bond is broken it does not reform reliably, particularly in cool weather. A roof where the seal has been broken across a wide area is functionally compromised even though it looks intact, and hand sealing it is a legitimate repair only where the extent is limited. Across a whole elevation it is a replacement conversation and we will say so rather than selling a repair that fails next season.
Wind damage to cladding matters mostly for what it opens rather than for how it looks. Siding blown off exposes the weather barrier, and if that barrier is torn or was already marginal, wind driven rain reaches the sheathing directly. The repair therefore includes inspecting and making good the barrier, not simply refitting boards over whatever is behind them.
Soffit and fascia damage is the most underestimated of all. Lost soffit panels give wind direct access into the roof space, where it can lift the covering from beneath and drive rain into insulation across a wide area. Damaged fascia compromises the gutter fixing and the roof edge detail at the same time.
